We've seen the same red chair in different scenes in the trilogy (such as the Keymaker) where the Resistance were unable to locate Neo, it makes sense that this would apply to the Agents as well.This month, we learn more about Increasing Sentience and the main collective consciousness forces involved in spiritual warfare on this earth. If the Agents had possessed him immediately, the Resistance would have just executed Neo on the spot. The machines put a tracker in Neo to find Morpheus. There was a gun trained on Neo from the moment he got into the car all the way to the hideout.

It's stated by Morpheus that some people can become so dependent on the Matrix that they will fight to protect it, which allows the Agents to take over them. Simply put- the AI software programs are psychopaths. But when do the Agents finally appear? Just after Neo has a meeting with his boss, who reprimands him and tells hims he "has a choice" and that Neo "thinks the rules don't apply to him." His boss is one of the programs living within the Matrix and performed an assessment of him, and reported him to the agents.Įven the best AI can't fully replicate the emotional state of humans, and if these AI driven human simulants are trying to live among us, then there are bound to be indicators that would give them away. In the first movie, when the agents learn from the informant (Cypher) that Morpheus is looking for Neo, the agents say "start a trace." If they wanted to pick Neo up, they could have gone to his home or picked him up on the street. That is why anyone who hasn't been unplugged is only "potentially" an agent, and why you don't see entire crowds (only certain individuals) turn into agents when Neo runs through the streets. Their job is to monitor the behaviors of humans that are plugged in, looking for indicators of potential trouble, and reporting their findings to the sentinel programs who have the ability to take control of them. The human mind can be fed inputs to deceive them into believing they are living in the dreamworld, but their minds can't just be hijacked and taken over by computers. I was always confused about how they could do this to people that are plugged in. During the iconic "woman in the red dress" scene, Morpheus says "they can move in and out of any software still hardwired to the system" and that "anyone we have not unplugged is potentially an agent."ĭuring the course of the next three films we see Agents jump in and out of various people while in the Matrix, inhabiting their bodies and using them as digital avatars.
